Abstract

This study investigated the prevalence of protozoan and helminthic infections among children in Al-Najaf Province and examined their association with key epidemiological factors such as gender, age, pet ownership, and seasonal variation. Stool samples collected from children attending two major hospitals between January and November 2022 revealed a considerable burden of intestinal parasitic infections. Protozoa were more frequently detected than helminths, with Entamoeba histolytica and Giardia lamblia representing the most common parasites. Higher infection rates were observed among males, younger age groups, and during the summer season. The findings underscore the ongoing public health challenge posed by intestinal parasites in the region and highlight the need for effective preventive strategies, health education, and improved hygiene measures. This study provides updated epidemiological data for Al-Najaf province and supports the importance of continuous surveillance to guide locally appropriate interventions.
