The Effect of Immunomodulatory Agent Lanolin versus Glycerin in the Treatment of Induced Eczema in albino rats: Histological study

Abstract

Background & aim: The oily substance lanolin, sometimes referred to as wool wax, is released by the sebaceous glands under sheep's skin.  Because of its anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and skin-protective qualities, it may be used to treat eczema and other skin disorders. Therefore, this study compared the effect of Lanolin and glycerin in the treatment of induced eczema in adult albino rats.

Methodology: Forty-eight adult albino rats weighing between 250 and 350 grams were divided into two groups at random: one for eczema, which was caused by putting cotton swabs containing 99.9% pure acetone to shaved skin. Following three days of acetone treatment, the eczema group was split into two equal subgroups (16 rats each), and they were given either lanolin or glycerin.  On the third day, the rats were slaughtered after continuing their individual treatments for a further 72 hours.

Results: Comparing the eczematous skin to control sections, histopathological analysis showed notable alterations.  These included fissures, breaks in the epidermal layer brought on by dry skin, an accumulation of inflammatory cells, and a discernible thickening and elongation of the outermost layer of skin.

Conclusions: According to the study, when acetone-induced dermatitis in albino rats is treated, lanolin has a better healing effect than glycerin.
